Free classified advertising tips – Don’t make these mistakes!

Free classified advertising does work IF you know what you are doing, but many people are making the same mistakes over and over again!

Considering Adlandpro is a free classified advertising site, I decided to take a bit of time to talk about the problems with many of the ads I am seeing being put on the different classified sites in the hopes that you will not make these same mistakes.  After all the point of putting an ad on a free or paid classified site is to be seen and taken seriously.

4 pets peeves in free classified advertising

Free classified advertising can be a great way to expose your message or product to the world and the fact that hundreds of people flock to such places as Craigslist or Kijiji every day proves that classified advertising works very well but you need to stop making these mistakes!

Not creating a profile! Today making a profile is easy and yet for some reason, people still feel that they don’t need to do this – why? If you want people to buy from you or click on your ad, then it would help if you created a profile as it shows that you are a real person.

Creating an ad with no image.  We all know how Pinterest is very popular right? When you create an ad with a good image of your product, you can also put it on Pinterest or other places where images can be shown ( nowadays that is just about everywhere you go). Food for thought!

Making Claims! I have to tell you this one drives me crazy. I have seen so many people say ” earn six figures” or “make a fortune” and all the other hype expressions so often, I’m unsure whether to laugh or be insulted. Reality check for everyone – when people read these kinds of claims they run as fast as they can. Why? For the simple reason, it is not realistic, it triggers doubt and disbelief in people. Maybe there was a time when this kind of “hype” would have worked, but nowadays, people are very smart when it comes to advertising and they know how to check things out. Does this mean you should never make claims?  To me, you should only make claims IF you have facts and figures to back you up!

Only placing a classified on big sites! Everyone seems to believe that you should use Craigslist or other big free classified sites to post an ad.  Here is a little secret for you…the smaller free classified sites are gems that manage to get good search engine rankings. A great way to think about smaller free classifieds is finding that little diner that has awesome food and great service and you hope like heck no one discovers it. Don’t underestimate the power of the smaller free classified sites.

Now that I have told you my “pet peeves”, writing a good classified ad like anything else you do as a marketer or affiliate marketer is worth doing but knowing how to make it work for you is something you need to learn about. Have you ever heard of a fellow named Charlie Page? To be honest neither did I until I started doing research about classified advertising and I found a post that he did that is bar none the best tutorial (that is how I look on it) on how to write a great classified ad. The post in question is called Four Steps To Writing a Great Classified Ad where he talks about

The Headline

The Body

The Call to Action

It truly is a great read and I think you will find it very useful…be sure to read the comments also as he explains a bit more on selling the features of a product versus selling the benefits, you will find it interesting.

One last point I would like to add, all of the classified sites whether free or paid are owned by men and women who are in the business of advertising.  While I am sure they do their very best to weed out the questionable ads people place, the fact is that they can’t filter for everything that is placed on their sites.  I feel it wise to say…always do your due diligence when checking out any ad and if you are creating an ad, please be honest in all of your dealings.

What are your pet peeves when it comes to classified advertising sites, what tips could you suggest to help people and what funny ads have you seen lately?

  • Thanks for very elaborative post about free classified site. I am agreed wit the “making claim” portion. You are right, I, myself don’t click such type of ads which are saying ‘earning six figure’ or something like that. When, i was new in this sectors, i clicked, but not now. I think most of the online worker do the same.
I hope, your this article will help both new comer and who are also struggling for being success.

  • Very good post, Diane! You really nailed the common mistakes made in free classified advertising. It’s funny how people will do it entirely differently if they are paying for an offline classified ad in a newspaper, yet the reality of it is that the same rules apply.

Thanks for mentioning Charlie Page. He really knows his stuff, plus he is an old friend I haven’t talked to in a very, very long time. Your post not only shared excellent tips from his article, but reminded me I need to keep in touch with old friends!

I got a good chuckle out of your sample ad at the end!

    • Thanks for sharing your thoughts Dave and I tend to agree with your thinking! for some reason when people see the word free *anything*, common sense goes out the window! While there are many people who feel that free classifieds are more old school, I think if people were to study them, they would see that this form of advertising can be very good for being seen on the search engines especially if people paid attention to the SEO and yes indeed one can indeed to SEO on a classified and have it seen.
When I saw that ad ( the one at the bottom) I just giggled and glad you liked it also :-)

  • Thanks for another informative article.

I want to refer to the point about “Making claims” . This one is the biggest reason which affects reliability of the program which is being promoted, the marketer and the place where the claim is made. The marketing individuals are being told to blast their ads on multiple classifieds and place as many ads as possible and as often as possible. Marketers are being given per-written ads which they have no way to verify and are making statements which apply only in no more than 1% of cases. The marketer goal is to get another individual to signup under them and get portion of their signup fee. They are not concerned about the statements they make because they believe that since they signed up when seeing such and ad, it is OK to continue placing it.

Because of this mentality many sites are disallowing any business opportunity ads on their boards.

Looking at the current trends, network marketers are going to end up with nowhere to go if this mentality is not changed. Sites like Google, Facebook, Linkedin, WordPress have already mechanism in place which removes content which is associated with spammy sites. Various email providers are also blocking messages coming from or promoting sites which have been identified as questionable or spammy. Is this bad thing? Hopefully this will cause that businesses which use questionable tactics will lose their ability to be visible. The bad thing is that internet is becoming less and less affordable for the small guys and like previously TV, radio and newspapers is being monopolized by big companies, which can drive their advertising prices to the levels not affordable to young part time businesses.

  • Considering how you have been a business owner for so many years and have seen so many trends and ads being placed in your site, I would imagine that you must shake your head at times at what people do, because of the poor teaching people are being given and are told what to do, to be honest it makes me mad!

Do I agree with what you are saying…you bet I do and wish you would say it more often!

Thanks for your valuable feedback and keep spreading the message..k?

  • You definitely want to sell the benefits of your product rather than the features. You have to keep asking yourself. How does this benefit a customer. How will it improve their life, or how will it eliminate a problem. Reinforcing the benefits of a product really help to sell it
